The Reed Union School District board approved the district's comprehensive safety plan for the 2023-24 school year and extended a facilities agreement with the Town of Corte Madera at its October 17 meeting. The board also honored two newly tenured teachers and observed a moment of silence for a beloved educator who recently passed away.
The meeting opened with a moment of silence for Ashley Williams, a district educator who died on October 13, 2023, from breast cancer. Board President Jacqueline Jaffee led the remembrance.
Teacher Tenure Recognition
The board recognized two teachers who earned tenure: Allison O'Brien, who attended and received flowers and a gift, and Cynthia Easterday, who could not attend but sent a message of appreciation that Superintendent Kimberly McGrath read aloud.
Consent Agenda
Trustees unanimously approved a consent agenda covering routine business including personnel reports, warrants, certificated and classified seniority lists for 2023-24, the annual capital facilities fund report for 2022-23, and a retirement agreement with Janet Cerni. The consent agenda also included second reading approval of board policies aligned with California School Boards Association recommendations and the quarterly Williams Act report.
Cybersecurity and Program Updates
Director of Technology Evan McKay presented information on the state of cybersecurity in the district. The board received annual reports on the English Language Learner program from Superintendent McGrath and ELL coordinator Jennifer Conde, as well as a math program update from Math Teacher-on-Special-Assignment Nathan Grebil on implementation of math task force recommendations. Representatives from the district PTA and Foundation for Reed Schools also reported on recent activities, including the Run for Reed event.
Safety Plan Approval
The board unanimously approved the district's comprehensive safety plan for 2023-24. Superintendent McGrath described it as a "living document" that can be modified during the school year as needed. Trustee Shelby Pasarell Tsai raised questions about wording in the sexual activity section, and McGrath agreed to review and adjust that portion appropriately.
Granada Park Agreement
Chief Business Official Carlos Estrella presented an extension of the revocable license agreement between the district and the Town of Corte Madera for continued use of Granada Park. The board approved the extension unanimously.
Administrative Position and Staffing
Trustees approved a job description for a newly created administrative secretary position covering business, education, human resources, and student services departments. The board also unanimously approved Resolution No. 04-2023/2024 authorizing a variable term waiver for Gagan Gill-Bhadare for the 2023-24 school year. Variable term waivers allow districts to hire teachers who have not yet completed all credentialing requirements.
Policy Updates
Superintendent McGrath presented updated board policies for first reading to align with CSBA standards. Trustees provided comments for consideration before the policies return for second reading and formal adoption at a future meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 7:37 PM. Board Clerk Sherry Wangenheim was absent; all other trustees attended.
