The Reed Union School District board unanimously adopted a Spanish Task Force Action Plan at its May 14, 2024 meeting, aimed at expanding Spanish language instruction across the district. Strategic Planning
Superintendent Dr. Kimberly McGrath presented a draft strategic plan framework for 2024-2030, organized around six pillars: Academic Excellence, Social Emotional Learning, Staff, Community and Families, Facilities, and Finance. Trustees Sherry Wangenheim and Liz Webb agreed to conduct an in-depth review of the framework, with the goal of adopting the plan at the June 11 board meeting.
Math Curriculum Updates
District Math Teacher-on-Special-Assignment Nathan Grebil reported that a Math Curriculum Committee has narrowed six potential elementary math programs to two finalists that will be piloted during the 2024-2025 school year. Grebil also presented preliminary data on having all seventh-graders take Math 7C this year. Two Del Mar math instructors, Rian Lynam and Kathleen Gaine, provided public comment on the Math 7C discussion. Trustee Wangenheim requested that future Math Action Plan updates include documented progress directly on the plan itself.
Budget and Administrative Updates
Chief Business Official Carlos Estrella reported limited details were available on the Governor's May budget revision and said he would continue monitoring state budget developments while preparing the district budget. Superintendent McGrath noted that interviews for a new Chief Business Official had been scheduled for April 18. McGrath also reported that staff evaluations were on track and grade level coordinators for 2024-2025 had been determined.
Additional Board Actions
The board unanimously adopted Resolution No. 06-2023/2024 on consolidation of services. Trustees also approved field trip expenses for the 2024-2025 school year, though Trustee Wangenheim requested a revised format for next year's presentation that balances using numbers as metrics while maintaining flexibility for instructional activities.
The board conducted a first reading of revised board policies aligned with California School Boards Association standards, with final adoption scheduled for the June 4 meeting. Trustee Shelby Pasarell Tsai requested information from CSBA on policy changes required by new Title IX updates from the Department of Education.
Community Reports
The Foundation for Reed Schools reported meeting its annual fundraising goal following successful gala and fashion show events. PTA President Mickey Bruce Hubbell highlighted end-of-year activities including Teacher and Staff Appreciation events, the Celebration of Education, and eighth-grade graduation preparations.
