The Reed Union School District board approved School Accountability Report Cards for the 2022-2023 school year and a new job description for an elementary music teacher at its February 13, 2024 meeting. The music position will be used to replace longtime Bel Aire music teacher Jeb Gist, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

Closed Session

The board met in closed session beginning at 4:48 p.m. to discuss the superintendent's evaluation and one potential litigation matter. Board President Afsaneh Zolfaghari reported no action to announce when the public session began at 6:04 p.m.

School Presentations

Reed Elementary School Principal Dr. Mary Niesyn and teachers Paul Devoto and Erica Leinbach presented on activities in the Reed STEAM Lab and Builder's Studio. Del Mar Middle School librarian Ryan Sonneville delivered the annual district library report, highlighting the district's commitment to library media centers at all three schools. Nathan Grebil, the district's teacher on special assignment, updated trustees on math initiatives across the district.

Community Organization Reports

PTA District President Mickey Bruce Hubbell reported on recent activities including a new sound system purchase at Bel Aire, the San Francisco Opera's visit to Reed School, and preparations for the upcoming Del Mar Middle School play. Alie Hart from The Foundation for Reed Schools provided updates on the upcoming phone bank fundraiser and preparations for the foundation's gala and fashion show.

Superintendent's Report

Superintendent Dr. Kimberly McGrath presented updates on absenteeism, the YouthTruth Survey, the Spanish Task Force, the Annual Report to the Community, artificial intelligence professional development at the Marin County Office of Education, playground updates, and the lunch program. Chief Business Official Carlos Estrella discussed the district's lunch program and support provided to other districts. McGrath also presented information on the district's strategic plan for 2024-2030, which is currently in development with input from community stakeholder groups.

Enrollment Projections

Estrella provided current enrollment figures and projections for the 2024-2025 school year, including anticipated staffing needs.

Board Actions

The board unanimously approved School Accountability Report Cards for the 2022-2023 school year for submission to the state and publication on the district website. Trustee Shelby Pasarell Tsai requested more detailed facilities comments and salary data clarifications in future reports.

Trustees unanimously approved the elementary music teacher job description, which will guide the search for Gist's replacement. The board also unanimously approved an updated salary schedule for Extended School Year teachers to align with the current Reed District Teachers Association contract.

The board completed a first reading of revised board policies to align with California School Boards Association standards. Trustee suggestions will be incorporated before the policies return for second reading and adoption at the March 12, 2024 meeting.

The consent agenda, approved unanimously, included personnel reports, warrants, and second reading approval of board policies aligning with CSBA recommendations.

Board President Zolfaghari adjourned the meeting at 8:18 p.m.
