The Reed Union School District board unanimously approved its 2023-24 Second Interim Budget Report with a "Positive Certification" of the district's financial condition on March 12, signaling fiscal health through the midpoint of the school year. Trustees also accepted the district's clean audit for fiscal year 2022-23 with no issues identified by auditors.

Del Mar Named Distinguished School

The meeting opened with celebration as board members and administrators congratulated Del Mar Middle School on being named a California Distinguished School. Five sixth-grade students—Ava, Johanna, Ella, Dary, and Kaveh—presented their humanities projects on Egypt alongside teachers Abby O'Leary and Ross Sargent.

Closed Session and Legal Matters

The board met in closed session beginning at 4:47 p.m. to discuss potential litigation involving two cases. Board President Afsaneh Zolfaghari reported there was nothing to share publicly from the closed session when trustees reconvened at 6 p.m.

Del Mar Music Camp Trip Approved

Trustees unanimously approved an overnight field trip for Del Mar students to Cazadero Music Camp. Trustee Shelby Pasarell Tsai pulled the item from the consent agenda for separate discussion. After Superintendent Dr. Kimberly McGrath presented details and answered questions, the board approved the trip with an estimated cost of $5,000 to the district.

Financial Reports

Chief Business Official Carlos Estrella presented two major financial items. The board unanimously accepted the independent audit for fiscal year 2022-23, which found no issues requiring attention. Estrella then presented the Second Interim Budget Report covering the current 2023-24 school year. Trustees Sherry Wangenheim and Liz Webb moved and seconded approval of the Positive Certification, which was unanimously approved.

Equity and Artificial Intelligence Updates

Grade-level coordinators David Sawyer from Bel Aire and Christina Lopez from Reed presented an update on equity and inclusion activities across all three district schools. Separately, Superintendent McGrath briefed trustees on artificial intelligence usage within the district and the broader education field. President Zolfaghari requested continued monitoring of AI developments, and McGrath agreed to provide updates as needed.

Survey Results and Community Reports

Director of Student Services Brian Lynch presented results from the latest YouthTruth survey of students, staff, and families. Annie Defesche from The Foundation for Reed Schools updated trustees on upcoming spring events including the Gala and Leadership Circle event. PTA District President Mickey Bruce Hubbell reported on activities including parent education events, the Bel Aire Play, the Reed Book Fair, a mural project, and preparations for Del Mar's eighth-grade graduation in June.

Policy Updates and Other Business

The board conducted a first reading of revised board policies to align with California School Boards Association standards. Trustee suggestions will be incorporated before the policies return for second reading and adoption at the April 16 meeting. The consent agenda, approved with one removal, included personnel reports, warrants, and second reading approval of other board policies.

The meeting adjourned at 8:53 p.m.
