The Reed Union School District Board of Trustees voted 4-0 on April 15 to authorize Superintendent Dr. Kimberly McGrath to serve a non-reelection notice to a probationary certificated employee, adopting Resolution No. 04-2024/2025 during closed session. The board also introduced the new Reed Elementary School principal and approved a reading difficulties screener for the district.
Closed Session Decision
The board met in closed session from 4:52 PM to 5:41 PM to discuss conference with labor negotiators and public employee discipline matters. Board President Sherry Wangenheim reported in open session that trustees had voted to authorize the non-reelection notice for a probationary certificated employee. Trustee Afsaneh Zolfaghari was absent from the meeting; the four present trustees approved the resolution unanimously.
New Principal Introduction
Superintendent McGrath introduced Aubrey O'Connor as the new principal of Reed Elementary School to the board and community members.
Consent Agenda Approvals
The board unanimously approved the consent agenda, which included the personnel report, warrants, a retirement with optional programs agreement for Kelly Casey, the quarterly Williams Act report, and second reading approval of board policies. No items were removed from consent for separate discussion.
Reading Difficulties Screener
Trustees unanimously approved adoption of the mCLASS DIBELS Reading Difficulties Screener, as recommended by Coordinator of Educational Services Nicole Trickett. This tool will be used to identify students who may be experiencing reading difficulties.
Math and Enrollment Updates
Ms. Trickett presented an update on current math activities and implementation of the Math Task Force Action Plan in the district. Chief Business Official Dr. Chris J. Kim presented current district enrollment figures and projected enrollment by grade for the 2025-2026 school year.
Transportation and Staffing Actions
The board unanimously agreed to support a letter regarding bike lanes related to the Transportation JPA, directing the district office to send it via email and postal mail to a distribution list and individual board members of respective organizations.
Trustees also approved the annual Declaration of Need for Fully Qualified Teachers for the 2025-2026 school year and adopted Resolution No. 05-2024/2025 designating the week of May 5-9, 2025 as the Week of the School Employee in Reed Union School District.
Community and Administrative Reports
Mickey Bruce Hubbell, Reed Union School District PTA President, and Annie Defesche, Director of Development for The Foundation for Reed Schools, reported on activities and fundraising results. Bel Aire Elementary School Principal John DiCosmo reported on field trips and assemblies at his school.
Superintendent McGrath reported that the Strategic Plan Collaborative will meet in May, the Budget Advisory Committee meeting is being coordinated, LCAP survey information and advisory meetings are beginning at each school site, a food service tasting event with multiple vendors will occur in April, and negotiations with the Reed District Teacher's Association are progressing with the next session scheduled for April 21.
The board conducted a first reading of new board policies, which will return for second reading and adoption at the May 13, 2025 regular meeting. The meeting adjourned at 8:01 PM.
