Meeting Recording

RUSD has not published a recording for this meeting. The district currently shares board-meeting recordings going back to August 2025. This recap is built from the official published agenda and approved minutes — see the Agenda tab below for the full item-by-item breakdown.

The Reed Union School District board unanimously approved a new mathematics curriculum for elementary grades and ratified a contract agreement with the teachers' association at its May 13 meeting. The board also approved field trip funding for the coming school year while requesting more information about a fourth-grade overnight program that was put on hold.

New Math Curriculum

The board voted 5-0 to adopt Amplify Desmos Mathematics as the new curriculum for prekindergarten through fifth grade. Director of Educational Services Nicole Trickett and second-grade teacher Paul Devoto presented a demonstration of the program before trustees approved the adoption. Trustee Afsaneh Zolfaghari made the motion, with Vice President Shelby Pasarell Tsai seconding.

Teachers Contract

Trustees unanimously approved a tentative agreement with the Reed District Teachers' Association that includes contract language changes. The board held a required public hearing on the agreement, though no members of the public commented. Trustee Sandeep Sahai moved approval, seconded by Trustee Liz Webb.

Field Trips and MOSAIC Program

The board approved the 2025-26 field trip budget with an additional allocation of approximately $75,000 for a fourth-grade social-emotional learning program, pending further board approval. Superintendent Kimberly McGrath had proposed putting the traditional MOSAIC fourth-grade overnight program on hold for additional evaluation. After public comment from Bel Aire Elementary Principal John DiCosmo and parent Linda Sapolsky, trustees requested more information about MOSAIC at the June 3 meeting. Trustee Tsai moved to approve the field trip list with the extra funding contingent on future approval of a fourth-grade program.

Community Survey Postponed

Trustees postponed approval of a letter of agreement for a community survey with vendor FM3 after raising numerous questions. Superintendent McGrath will work with FM3 to answer trustee concerns and bring the item back in June.

Board Policy Corrections

The board approved two board policies after correcting an administrative error. Trustee Tsai noted that changes to Budget Policy 3100 and Independent Study Policy 6158 that were discussed at the April meeting had not been implemented in the versions presented for second reading. Superintendent McGrath acknowledged the error, and trustees approved the policies with corrections.

Enrollment and Staffing

Chief Business Official Chris Kim presented updated enrollment projections showing the need to add a fifth kindergarten class for the 2025-26 school year. Separately, Trickett provided an update on Math 7C implementation and its impact on eighth-grade algebra readiness.

Other Actions

The board unanimously adopted the 2026-27 school year calendar. Trustees also approved routine consent items including personnel reports, warrants, a renewed legal services agreement with Lozano Smith, and a student teaching agreement with San Francisco State University.

The meeting began with closed session at 4:50 p.m. to discuss superintendent evaluation, labor negotiations, and employee discipline matters. Board President Sherry Wangenheim reported nothing to announce from closed session when the public meeting reconvened at 6:15 p.m.

Trustees heard reports from the PTA on May staff appreciation activities and from the Foundation for Reed Schools on its successful recent gala event. The meeting adjourned at 9:51 p.m.
